The
Cardinal was a Knight of Columbus for nearly 50 years. He received the Gaudium et Spes award, the highest honor given by the Knights of Columbus. Quoting Supreme Knight

enthusiasm in the service of God was an inspiration to all who had the
privilege of knowing him."
Once he described his own
vocation as "the story of a happy, happy priest who simply wants to tell the
whole world that the priesthood of our church is a truly important way to
serve God, and a way of life on which our Catholic people - indeed our
world-depend so much."

You
may wonder, "Who is that new kid on the block?" Let me share with you a
little bit of my biography. I am the youngest of 5 sisters and brothers. I
was born in Lambayeque, Peru, on July 16, 1980. I grew up in the northern
part of my country. I studied in a Catholic High School. When I was 16 I
felt the call of God to the priesthood and I entered the seminary in which
I completed my Philosophical studies and did some theology in Lima, Peru;
and Santiago, Chile. I eventually came to the US in 2002 and I became a
seminarian for Saginaw Diocese in 2003. I spent a full year serving at Our
Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Bay City and learned English as a second
language at SVSU. I continued my studies at Catholic Theological Union,
CTU, Chicago. I finished my degree at University St. Mary of the Lake /
Mundelein Seminary, Illinois. I graduated in May 2007 in the Master of
Divinity program, I was ordained a Deacon on November 27, 2006 at
Guadalupe Church, Bay City, and by the grace of God, I was ordained a
priest on June 8th of 2007 at St. Mary Cathedral, Saginaw.
I love preaching, I have a passionate love for Scripture, I enjoy music.
Presiding over the Eucharistic Table is an amazing experience for me. I am
very happy that I was assigned to you as sacramental minister. You are so
kind and welcoming to me. Please give me some
time to learn your names. See you on the third week of August! God bless
you all. |

The James Cardinal Hickey Council
was founded in May of 2006 through the efforts of several men of the Parish
of St. Brigid, with the guidance of Fr. James Bessert, our Pastor and a 4th
Degree Knight. The Council was named to honor a "son" of the Saint
Brigid Parish, a man who dedicated his life to service, and who believed in
active support of the religious vocations. The Cardinal especially supported
the efforts of the Knights of Columbus. The James Cardinal Hickey Council was
formed to work closely with the St.Brigid Parish in Midland, of the Diocese
of Saginaw to: 1. Support the Catholic vocations, 2. Support our Pastor, and
3. Support the Parish Community through service in various projects and
activities. Present and prospective members are expected to be active
participants in our Parish and Council service.
