James Cardinal Hickey Assembly 2974 March 2008 Newsletter.

The James Cardinal Hickey Assembly 2974 meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7pm in the St. Brigid Elementary School Grade Seven classroom, formerly the Music Room, 130 W. Larkin St., Midland.  Meeting dates for 2008 are: Mar 25, Apr 22,

May 27, June 24, July 22, Aug 26, Sep 23, Oct 28, Nov 25 and Dec 23.  Please put these on your calendar.

Regarding our assembly chalice that will be engraved, Fr. Jose Cabrera says that he knows of a church that would happily receive a chalice. "La Milagrosa" Chapel in Chiclayo Peru, which was build a few years ago, has become a spring of peace for the neighborhood.  Even though there is still extreme poverty in that area, the presence of the Catholic Church through "La Milagrosa" Chapel has become a beacon of hope.  Fr. Jose is sure that they would be delighted to use a new chalice for their liturgical celebrations.  Fr. Jose will personally visit that Chapel on his trip to Peru this July and would be delighted to bring our chalice to them.  This is one possibility.  Are there other suggestions?  Let us discuss this at our meeting and hopefully make a decision about where our chalice should reside.

I will be representing our assembly at the Fourth Degree District 3 meeting on April 5th in Cheboygan.  If you have any interest in attending the District meeting please let me know.

The assembly is actively looking for members to serve as officers.  If you are interested, please contact the committee chairman

Bill Lake at 989-631-9082 or E-mail him at farmhouse4@chartermi.net.  The slate of Assembly officers for the 2008-2009 fraternal year will be discussed at the April 22nd meeting.  Following that meeting, the slate of proposed assembly officers will be E-mailed or mailed to all members followed by voting at the May 27th meeting.

The next Fourth Degree Exemplification on April 26, 2008 at Bay City St. Stans is fast approaching.  At the September 2007 meeting, assembly members agreed to cover the cost of the Exempt. for any of the priests in the parishes that our assembly covers.  The basic Exemplification cost to a candidate per the Supreme Assembly is $70 which covers the $12 fee to Supreme, the $15 cost of a baldric and 4th Degree pin, one banquet ticket and the expense of the degree for the Master (Degree team expense, etc.).  For any candidate not interested in attending the banquet, the Master will deduct the actual cost of the banquet (cost not price).  That will probably be about $10, reducing the basic candidate charge to $60.  So, a candidate can take his Fourth Degree for as low as $60.00 plus the expense of a tux.  The tux can be bought, rented or borrowed.  Lets start signing up those candidates.  I would like to see all the local councils really promote the Fourth Degree and get a great turn out from our local councils at that Exemp.  The information about the Exemp. is now available.  I will have the information at the meeting.  If you have a candidate or you would like to attend the banquet, please see me at the meeting or contact me.

The next assembly-sponsored casino trips are an overnight trip to the Soo and St. Ignace in May 2008 and a fall color tour to Little River in Manistee on October 15, 2008.  Nineteen people have already signed up.  A payment of $25.00 to Fred Schaeding (1111 Buckhorn Circle, Sanford, MI 48657, home phone-989-687-9086 or cell phone 989-430-2474) gives a person a seat on the bus, first come, first serve.

Upcoming Midland Color Corps events:

March 30:  Diocesan-wide Mass and Corp. Communion at 10am, Sunday at St. Mary Cathedral, Saginaw.

April 26:  4th Degree Exemplification at Bay City St. Stans.

May 22-24:  State Convention on Machinaw Island.

Sept. 20:  4th Degree Exemplification in Hancock.

Any Fourth Degree Sir Knight interested in joining the Color Corps?  We are in need of more new members.  It is a very rewarding experience serving your Brother Knights and has a camaraderie that you can’t get elsewhere.

Bring a friend to the meeting.
